21 Days of Devotion is our church’s season of fasting and prayer. For 21 days, we lean in spiritually—quieting distractions, drawing closer to God, and positioning our hearts for a God-filled year ahead.
What Is Fasting?
Fasting is intentionally giving up food—or another regular comfort or habit—for a set period of time to focus more fully on God. In Scripture, fasting is often connected with prayer as a way to seek God’s presence, wisdom, and direction.
Fasting isn’t about perfection or punishment. It’s about creating space to hear from God and respond to Him.
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8
Why Do We Fast?
The Bible shows people fasting for many reasons, including:
Fasting reminds us that our ultimate dependence is on God—not on food, comfort, or routine.
How Can I Fast?
There is no single “right” way to fast. Scripture shows many different approaches. We encourage you to pray and ask God how He’s leading you.
Common Types of Fasting
1. Complete Fast
Drinking only liquids (such as water or light juices) for a period of time.
2. Partial Fast
Abstaining from food during certain times of the day (for example, sunrise to sunset or one meal a day).
3. Selective Fast
Removing certain foods or drinks from your diet (such as sweets, caffeine, or meat). The Daniel Fast is a well-known example.
4. Soul Fast
Giving up non-food distractions like social media, television, or entertainment.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” — Matthew 4:4
